Why ARE there so many songs about rainbows? Can YOU tell me how to get to Sesame Street? Questions like these are the brain child of Jim Henson – muppet maker, mirth bringer and magical storyteller. Patrick J. Mooney hopes to answer those questions and more on a magic carpet ride through the elaborate and whimsical worlds that Henson created and the music he inspired over the last 60 years. It’s time to get things started!
Musical Direction by Nick Schlueter. Directed by Merry Keller.
Patrick J. Mooney is a graduate of Washington University and a mathematics teacher at Parkway West High School. His foray into theatre began in high school as a member of the Pekin Noteables Show Choir. He has since been involved in some local theatre productions with Marble Stage (Fiddler on the Roof, Once Upon a Mattress) and has choreographed eleven musicals for Parkway West. He has been singing from the age of 10, and was a 20 year member of the Catholic Student Center Choir, and is currently singing at St. Cronan’s and St. Louis Metro Singers.

Union Avenue Opera extends its offerings into the fall with the debut of its One-Act Festival, running October 10 and 11 at 7:30 PM and October 12 at 3:00 PM. This exciting new venture features bold contemporary works in an intimate setting, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience compact, powerful storytelling from emerging and established composers.
The evening features two powerful chamber operas based on this year’s them of Exploring Identity and Injustice through Opera:
dwb (driving while black) – A gripping one-woman opera exploring the emotional tension, fear, and love of a Black mother raising a son in America. Through music and monologue, it paints a portrait of parenting under the constant threat of racial injustice. Music by Susan Kander with a libretto by Roberta Gumbel.
As One – A groundbreaking chamber opera for two voices and string quartet that follows the journey of a transgender protagonist from youth to adulthood in a deeply personal and moving coming-of-age story. Music and concept by Laura Kaminsky with libretto by Kimberly Reed.
These works offer a bold and intimate evening of opera that speaks urgently to our time. With themes of identity, vulnerability, and the search for understanding, this festival invites audiences into a space of empathy, reflection, and transformation. The 2025 One-Act Festival is made possible by a grant from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing St. Louis and the Whitaker Foundation.

Ellis Paul doesn’t just write songs; he’s a guitar-carrying reporter who covers the human condition and details the hopes, loves, losses of those he observes, turning their stories into luminous pieces of music that get under your skin and into your bloodstream. And much like the artists who have influenced him, everyone from Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon to the singer-songwriter who is undoubtedly his greatest inspiration, Woody Guthrie, Paul weaves deeply personal experiences with social issues and renders them as provocative works that are as timely as they are timeless. Born and raised in Maine, Paul attended Boston College on a track scholarship and in the evenings became a fixture on the city’s open mic circuit. After winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition, he caught the ear of folk luminary Bill Morrissey, who produced his indie album Say Something in 1993. This led to a seven album contract with Rounder Records and the 1994 album, Stories.
His songs have appeared in several blockbuster films (Me, Myself, and Irene; Shallow Hal, Hall Pass) and have been covered by award winning country artists (Sugarland, Kristian Bush, Jack Ingram). Through a steady succession of albums of his own – a remarkable 23 releases so far – and a constant touring presence around the world, Paul’s audience has grown into a loyal legion of fans. Along the way, he has picked up an impressive number of awards including the prestigious Kerrville New Folk Award, 15 Boston Music Awards, An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Maine, the 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards Artist of the Year and most recently his album, The Storyteller’s Suitcase, was named the 2019 NERFA Album of the Year.
His new album “55” touches on the necessity of gratitude in a difficult era of the pandemic and divided political stances on his own imprint, Rosella Records
