Bird flu is spreading in dairy herds. Midwest farmers are vigilant but not alarmed
The flu has been found in cows for the first time, but most cattle seem to be showing only mild symptoms and recovering from the illness. Officials say the pasteurization process means milk remains safe.

The U.S. has lost more than 2,800 newspapers since 2005, many of them in rural areas. Now some journalists are redoubling their efforts to provide local news and trying new models in a difficult industry.

New park at the Chain of Rocks Bridge in St. Louis makes safety a priority
The new park includes gated entrances and protected trails and parking. Starting Sunday, it will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 30 minutes after sunset.
St. Louis team of ‘Purple Shirts’ diverts police intervention
Under the city’s Office of Violence Prevention, the Community Centered Crisis & Response Team was launched last year and consists of behavioral health clinicians who are embedded into the 911 call center and sometimes tag along with police to assist with non-police interventions.

Illinois Supreme Court upholds law limiting where child sex offenders can live
In a unanimous ruling, Illinois' highest court found the residency restriction “does not infringe upon a child sex offender’s fundamental rights” and that there was a “rational basis” for restrictions where a person convicted of such a crime can live.
BJC opens first adult sickle cell treatment center to help people manage crises
Barnes-Jewish Hospital opened its first adult sickle cell treatment center. The referral-based outpatient center will provide IV infusions to people with sickle cell disease who need immediate relief from pain without waiting at emergency rooms.
Almost-famous St. Louis band the Aerovons finally sees 1969 recordings released on vinyl
A remastered version of their album, recorded at EMI Recording Studios in London, will be released by Euclid Records on April 20.
