St. Louis, MO – The president of Saint Louis University is still not saying why the school fired basketball coach Brad Soderberg last week. But Father Lawrence Biondi has broken his silence on the matter, somewhat.
SLU fired the coach on Tuesday of last week. Since then no one at the university would say why, or even who made that decision.
Local sports reporters pounced. Bernie Miklasz, a sports columnist for the Post-Dispatch accused Biondi of hiding and questioned his courage.
But at a St. Louis Press Club meeting Thursday at SLU, Biondi made this pronouncement.
"I would like to announce that the next Billiken coach is Bernie Miklasz. Bernie has taken on the job for less than $100,000. Please join me in giving him a round of applause."
A SLU spokesman says the university will give details about the decision to fire Brad Soderberg, once SLU hires a new coach, for real.
