Some Metro-Easters still out of homes after derailment

By AP/KWMU

Troy, Ill. – About 50 people are still displaced from their Metro East homes today (Wed) as crews continue to clean up hazardous materials from a train derailment.

About 20 of the 131 cars on the CSX train went off the tracks Tuesday between Troy and St. Jacob, Ill. No one was hurt.

CSX spokesman Gary Sease says three of the cars spilled what he called a fairly significant amount of ammonium nitrate. Hydrogen peroxide also escaped from at least one car.

Sease says air monitoring at the scene shows no dangerous levels of either chemical. It's unclear how long the cleanup might take or when displaced residents might be allowed to return home.

The train was headed to Indianapolis from St. Louis. The cause of the derailment is not known.
