“The sign is down,” Clinton County Board Chairman Brad Knolhoff said Tuesday afternoon. “My understanding from Lamar [Advertising] is that it’s down, and it’s not going back up. I hope they stand by that.”

A billboard promoting the Proud Boys, a right-wing extremist group, has been put up near a high school in Clinton County in southwest Illinois, about 50 miles east of St. Louis.

“In some ways, we think that we live in Illinois and somehow we’re immune to this,” said David Goldenberg, the Midwest director of the Anti-Defamation League that issued the “Hate in the Prairie State” report.

The Marine Corps investigated whether the reservist son of a former San Diego Republican official tried to join a white supremacist group. But the outcome of the case provided little clarity into the military's new anti-extremism policy.
