The Missouri National Guard will start its groundwork in St. Louis on Thursday. Mayor Cara Spencer said the Guard will handle large debris.

As of Wednesday evening, Watson said there were about 163 displaced people across the three shelters, with just over 80 people staying at the 12th and Park location — the largest of the shelters.

There are around 800 emergency and transitional beds year-round, but it’s still not enough to meet the demand.

The windchill could hit 10 to 15 degrees below zero Fahrenheit on Sunday and Monday. In those conditions, frostbite can occur in 30 minutes and hypothermia can set in quickly.

The St. Louis Department of Human Services has increased its partnerships with local agencies to provide more beds and social services support throughout the winter for people who are experiencing homelessness.

St. Louis-area homeless shelters are making more beds and cots available for people in need of a warm place to escape the coming bitter cold.

Local providers and organizers are scrambling to keep a pop-up emergency shelter open during freezing temperatures, while they wait on the city to fund one.
