A St. Louis LGBTQ+ advocacy group says the Missouri Department of Revenue's recent policy change to identifying documents poses challenges for trans and nonbinary people. The department now requires gender reassignment surgery or a court order gender declaration to obtain a driver’s license or ID.

Proponents say the bill’s intent is to help decrease voter fraud in the state, while opponents worry it could lead to greater discrimination against noncitizens.

The bill, sponsored by Illinois State Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, and Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, would allow Illinoisans to put electronic versions of their driver's licenses and IDs on their phones.

“The amount of no-shows has been devastating,” said llinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

More than 300 vanity license plates were rejected by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office due to profanity, offensive language or illegibility.
