The Republican-led House gave first-round approval to legislation barring transgender athletes from participating on sport teams that align with their gender identity. Both bills need another vote before moving to the Senate.

The House General Laws Committee heard testimony on eight bills centered on the LGBTQ community on Tuesday. They would impose restrictions including barring transgender girls from participating in sports that align to their gender identity and from accessing gender-affirming health care.

State agencies were allowed to make emergency purchases over $50,000 during COVID-19 pandemic without following the normal process.
