Columbia, MO – The University of Missouri is offering its employees and students a discount on a credit monitoring service.
That follows a security breach last month in which a hacker got names and social security numbers of past and present employees.
A service called Triple Alert usually costs $5 a month for credit monitoring and identity theft insurance.
The UM discount will offer it for $3.46 a month. Spokesperson Scott Charton says people who bought a monitoring service before this deal will not be reimbursed.
"We are grateful if they've taken some steps to protect their personal information, but that could have been done at no charge through fraud alerts that you can place with the credit reporting agencies," Charton. "We're not in a position to reimburse them so that won't happen."
Charton says the university so far has not received any confirmed reports of identity theft.
