Student in Wentzville dies of bacterial meningitis

By AP/KWMU

Wentzville, MO – A student at Wentzville Holt High School died Sunday of bacterial meningitis. Officials say the 18-year old student had only reported symptoms of the disease on Thursday.

Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.

Symptoms include fever, severe headache, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck, shoulder and neck pain and rashes. Officials say the bacteria that causes meningitis is spread by direct contact with infected body secretions.

Health officials in St. Charles County say the family has asked that student's name not be released.

Grief counselors were at the school this (Monday) morning.
