St. Louis developers being asked to offer unused units

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – The state of Missouri is working with St. Louis area developers to find temporary housing for displaced hurricane victims.

The IRS recently waived a rule prohibiting low-income housing owners from providing shelter to victims who do not qualify as low-income.

Now, the Missouri Housing Development Commission is checking with developers to see how many housing units they have available, whether they be condos not yet sold or apartments not yet rented. The MHDC's David Bryan says at this point, there may be room for up to 150 people.

"Hopefully going forward we'll find a lot more than that, Bryan said. We're now into the point where those who were a little reticent about talking to us and providing how many units they might have available will probably be more inclined to do that.

The state has identified at least a dozen area properties that could potentially house storm victims.
