Springfield, Ill. – The head of an Illinois state agency that was the focus of a scathing audit has apologized for the department's response.

The reported noted questionable spending and contract dealings at the Department of Central Management Services (CMS).

The agency responded by attacking the auditor.

Now, a week later, CMS director Michael Rumman says the tone of that response was wrong. "It was not a good thing to have done." he told lawmakers Wednesday. "It was an absolute mistake. The purpose in why we did it is also irrelevant and in retrospect it was completely illogical."

Rumman says CMS is studying the audit findings but will continue to work with a contractor who made questionable billings. He says a change would cost too much.

The Illinois Attorney General may also investigate whether any activity was criminal.
