Local Cities Will Not Join State in Tax Holiday

(KWMU file)

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – People buying back-to-school items won't have to pay Missouri state sales tax for three days next month.

But many local towns and counties will still collect their own taxes.

The sales tax holiday will run August 13th through the 15th.

And it's only for items like clothes, back-packs, and computers.

But 65 of Missouri's 114 counties say they'll still collect their local tax.

175 cities will also keep the tax.

Local governments say they fear losing revenue from such a tax holiday which could affect their budgets.

But business groups, like the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, say the loss would be offset because people will probably also buy non-school items and boost local economies.
