Bacteria Tests on School Food Still Inconclusive

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Public health officials in St. Louis say lab tests on food believed to have sickened students at a city elementary school last week are inconclusive.

After lunch last Tuesday, several dozen students at Lafayette Elementary in Soulard were hospitalized. Many complained of nausea and vomiting.

The St. Louis Health Department's Larry Kettelhut says tests on milk from an Illinois dairy and food from a distributor in Ohio have revealed nothing.

"We have tested for a bacteria actually a bacteria toxin test," Kettelhut said. "I think we looked at what we thought might be the possible cause, the most likely cause, and it turns out those were not the causes."

Health officials are asking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for help.

They plan to meet with Lafayette Elementary students and their parents tonight.
