Legislature Passes Abortion-Waiting Bill

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Legislature has passed a
bill requiring a woman to wait 24 hours after consulting a doctor before having an abortion.

The bill now goes to Governor Holden -- who has previously threatened to veto the bill.

But unless supporters switch sides, the Legislature appears to have the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.

Supporters say the legislation would provide women with additional guidance on whether to proceed with an abortion.

Lawmakers opposing the bill cited concerns that it would interfere with a woman's right to an abortion.

The bill would require a statement signed by the woman and a doctor that they discussed all the risks and situational factors associated with an abortion.
