Carbondale, Ill. – Officials at Southern Illinois University won't announce who the new president of the university is this morning (Thursday), as first planned.
The university's Board of Trustees had planned to announce the name of the school's new president at a news conference.
But an SIU spokeswoman now says that announcement has been delayed until Monday. She added she didn't have any details about the reasons behind the delay.
PAPER SAYS POSHARD
Even with the delay, SIU's student newspaper, the Daily Egyptian reported in its Thursday edition that the choice will be former Congressman Glenn Poshard. The paper cites emails that were sent to members of the president search committee. Poshard resigned his seat on the Board of Trustees earlier this year to apply for the job.
Current SIU president James Walker announced earlier this year that he will retire June 30th. He's since gone on medical leave for an unspecified condition.
Four finalists were interviewed this week in St. Louis.
Poshard served for ten years in Congress, representing southern Illinois. He's likely best known throughout Illinois for losing a close race for Governor to George Ryan in 1998.
