Study: Global warming affects Missouri River Basin

By Steve Bell, KCUR

Kansas City, MO. – An environmental group is publicizing the results of a Colorado-based study of signs of global warming along the Missouri River basin.

The Missouri Public Interest Research Group says over the past four years temperatures ran about 1 and a half degrees warmer than the average for the preceding 100 years.

Ellen Treimel of the research group says the findings could mean trouble for Missouri farmers.

"We already saw the farming community having a hard time this past year with the drought and things like that not only are going to continue to happen, but will continue to get worse, Treimel said.

Treimel says the study indicates that America needs to address its energy emissions problems, starting with power plants, industry and vehicle emissions.

She says avoiding wasteful energy and water use are also important to the remedy for global warming.
