St. Louis, MO – St. Louis Archbishop Justin Rigali informed area Catholic clergy Tuesday that he will undergo surgery next week for prostate cancer. After a routine physical exam showed the presence of cancerous cells, Rigali and his doctors decided he will have his prostate removed on March 19.
Vicar General Monsignor Richard Stika says Rigali is asking for prayers.
At this time tests give no indication that the cancer has spread.
During Rigali's recuperation the archdiocese's three vicars general will fulfill the archbishop's duties.
The archbishop hopes to resume his full schedule by Easter.
