The lawsuit is the latest in a string of legal actions and investigations in the office.

St. Louis Sheriff Alfred Montgomery was caught on tape making Tony Kirchner roll dice for a chance to keep his job. After he was sacked anyway, the former sheriff’s deputy alleged that the firing was illegal and that it’s not the only improper termination.

The incident stems from a complaint lodged last week that alleges a detained person at the city jail was assaulted by a sheriff’s deputy.

In addition to the resolutions, the Public Safety Committee heard from acting Commissioner of Corrections Tammy Ross, who says her priorities for now include focusing on staffing and fostering partnerships.

The three-year deal will increase starting pay for a police officer to $64,000. It also strengthens protections for officers facing discipline and sets up a new appeals process for minor disciplinary issues.

Nearly 100 protesters and activists disrupted a city Board of Aldermen meeting on Friday, calling for immediate changes to the St. Louis City Justice Center, where 18 people in custody have died since 2020.

Ashley Johnson came to St. Louis from the FBI’s human resources division in Washington, DC. She began her career with the bureau in 2007 and spent much of her time at offices in the South.

If passed, Amendment 6 would allow Missouri to fund salaries and pensions for elected county sheriffs and prosecutors through court fees. It was placed on the Nov. 5 ballot by the General Assembly to reverse a Missouri Supreme Court ruling that found the fees unconstitutional.
