Local design competition encourages creation of tiny libraries

Children use a Little Free Library in North St. Louis.
Gina Sheridan

In celebration of D.E.A.R., “Drop Everything And Read,” day on April 12, we are taking a closer look at the importance of reading and getting books into the hands of children.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization in Wisconsin that posts small mailbox-like structures in neighborhoods and fills them with free books. They’ve inspired a movement that has spread to cities throughout the country, including St. Louis.

Space Architecture + Design, a local architecture firm, is hosting a competition to inspire the design of even more of these little libraries, with plans to donate them to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to help foster connections between the police and the communities they serve.

On Thursday, "St. Louis on the Air" host Don Marsh talked to Shelly Satke Niemeier of Space Architecture + Design and Lt. Janice Bockstruck from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department about the vision behind little libraries.
