Between recreational and medical marijuana, Missouri hit $350 million in sales in the first three months since the state began allowing dispensaries to sale legal weed. Yet cannabis business owners say those numbers could be even higher since cultivators and manufacturers aren’t working at max capacity.

Every state has at least some statute or case law that considers a fetus a person. Missouri is among at least 10 states with personhood language that is so broad it could be interpreted to apply to all civil and criminal laws, according to a report from Pregnancy Justice, a nonprofit that advocates for the rights of pregnant people.

Missouri escalates battle over books with rule threatening state funds for libraries
Missouri is one of a growing number of places where government funding is being deployed as the newest weapon in the fight over books. Beginning May 30, a new state rule could deny state funding to libraries over books deemed inappropriate for young readers — although it's not clear how it will be enforced.

A St. Louis-area African nonprofit uses dance to boost African girls' mental health
Vitendo4Africa is an African social organization in the St. Louis region providing dance therapy to African immigrant children weekly. Most of the children are either immigrants or the children of immigrants who struggle with depression and anxiety. Program director Faiza Muhambi says African children need dance to help improve their physical and mental health, which will benefit them educationally and socially.

Missouri budget agreement includes $2.8 billion to expand I-70 across the state
The Senate’s plan to go beyond the $860 million initially proposed to expand Interstate 70 remained in the budget agreed to by a Senate-House conference committee Wednesday night. Other Senate positions that remained were state funding for public libraries and the elimination of anti-DEI language in the budget.
