Aldermen needed an extra meeting to be able to accomplish all they wanted to before the current session adjourns on Monday. But the five-hour meeting also included some heated exchanges.
Missouri House approves shortening minimum unemployment benefits to 8 weeks
Missouri’s current unemployment benefit ranges from 13 to 20 weeks, depending on the state’s unemployment rate. The new bill shortens it to as few as eight.

With abortion bills stretching past state lines, Missouri is already headed to a 'post-Roe world'
If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, a Missouri law would automatically kick in to ban the procedure except in medical emergencies. Republican lawmakers have also proposed bills that would take aim at abortions occurring across state lines.
Known to be toxic for a century, lead still poisons thousands of Midwestern kids
Researchers say even a small amount of the toxin can harm kids’ development. One 2021 study found Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri had some of the highest rates of elevated blood lead levels in children.
