State Senate passes law partially lifting helmet restrictions

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – The state Senate has approved legislation that would allow motorcycle riders 21 years of age and older to ride without a helmet.

The helmets would still be required for all riders on interstate highways.

Supporters say mandatory helmet laws infringe on civil liberties. Opponents say helmets save lives, and keep down the cost of health care.

The change in the helmet law was part of a larger motorcycle insurance bill that passed 23-6 It now goes to the state House, where similar measures have passed before.
