Temperature still hasn't broken local record at Lambert

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – This week's weather is close to breaking low temperature records set a decade ago, but the thermometer at Lambert Airport still has not dipped below zero.

National Weather Service meteorologist Thomas Spriggs said people just outside the St. Louis metro area did see negative temperatures Wednesday night.

Parts of northern Missouri experienced temperatures as low as -13.

Spriggs said urban areas are generally warmer, and the lack of snow has kept the mercury from dipping further at Lambert.

"The last time St. Louis did get below zero, we had the combination of a cold air mass of this type of caliber and snow cover," Spriggs said. "We had about seven inches on the ground back in early January of 1999."

Spriggs said the cold weather is the result of a high pressure system that pushed in Arctic air, but he said the system is moving away fast.

Forecasters are predicting a low of zero Thursday night and a high of 24 degrees Friday.
