St. Louis – The eastern part of Winfield, Mo. is being evacuated after an early morning breach of the Pin Oak Levee in Lincoln County.
It had been the only levee still holding back the Mississippi River in the Winfield area.
The Army Corps of Engineers said the southern end of the Pin Oak levee broke around 5.20 a.m. However Corps spokesman Alan Dooley says the levee performed remarkably well.
"When you take an earthen levee and put this much water against it for this long, it's a testament to both the people who built the levee, and the people who fought it in this flood," Dooley said.
