St. Louis, MO. – The flooding throughout Missouri also is affecting animals.
The Humane Society of Missouri's Disaster Response Team is in Cape Girardeau County and Springfield Thursday helping to rescue animals in flooded areas.
Spokeswoman Jeane Jae says she expects more phone calls before the flooding ends.
Jae says the best option for pet owners who must evacuate is to bring their pets along.
"If at all possible take your pets with you," Jae said. "As we all learned from Hurricane Katrina, you never know how long you're going to be away from your property."
Jae says if it's not possible to bring pets with you, try to place them with friends or family.
She says the last resort is to leave them behind with plenty of food and water and identification.
