Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Senate has passed a bill that would shield homeowners from higher property taxes.
The bill would mandate rollbacks in property tax rates during years when reassessments are conducted.
It was sponsored by Senate President Pro-Tem Michael Gibbons (R, Kirkwood). He says all the key elements needed to help Missouri homeowners are in place.
"Mandatory tax rate rollback, making sure that new tax increases apply to the values in place at the time people vote, and making sure that the information is given to voters on not only changes in value, but how it's going to affect their taxes, (calculating) their projected tax liability," Gibbons said.
The bill would also provide state tax credits to low-income elderly homeowners in Missouri.
"I think we've made some real progress to protect taxpayers all across Missouri, and so we're very happy with it," Gibbons said.
The bill passed unanimously, 33 to 0. It now heads to the Missouri House.
