Chemical spill evacuates Mallinckrodt plant

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Workers at the Mallinckrodt plant in St. Louis returned to work this morning, after a chemical leak forced the evacuation of roughly 150 people from the plant and neighboring businesses.

Hydrochloric acid was released from a line attached to a storage tank around 11:30 Tuesday night.

About 100 people were evacuated from the plant, which makes pharmaceutical ingredients. Fire officials said they also evacuated a few area businesses, bringing their count to roughly 150.

Mallickrodt spokeswoman JoAnna Schooler says an employee and two contractors were evaluated at a hospital and released. She said the matter is being investigated.

St. Louis-based Mallinckrodt Incorporated is a subsidiary of Princeton, New Jersey-based Tyco International.
