Vatican denies Catholic teachers' union efforts

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – A group of St. Louis Catholic teachers has again been denied the right to unionize and bargain with the archdiocese.

The highest court in the Roman Catholic Church has upheld Archbishop Raymond Burke's decision in 2004 to reject the unionization efforts of the Association of Catholic Elementary Educators Local 1312.

Association President Mary Chubb said the inability to be recognized as a union is troubling for area teachers.

"What it has done to them is intimidate them and in some ways, silence them," Chubb said.

Chubb said the archdiocese is violating basic church doctrines on social justice in denying its employees a right to collective bargaining.
