Bond co-sponsors vision screening bill

By MO Public Radio

Kansas City, MO – Missouri's senior U.S. Senator is co-sponsoring legislation that would provide federal grants to states that create vision testing and treatment programs for children.

Republican Kit Bond says about one in four children has sight problems that can impede learning.

"Without vision care, some of our children will continue to fall through the cracks," Bond says. "Now I can relate to these problems because I was one that had undiagnosed vision problems."

Bond says his bill only creates the program; another bill would be needed to ensure funding.

The Centers for Disease Control says only a third of students get a vision test before going to school and many who are tested don't get the recommended follow up care.
