Corrosion caused partial bridge collapse

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – Missouri's transportation chief says crews are inspecting all bridges in the state that have the same design as the one that partially collapsed in St. Louis Thursday night.

A section of the Delor Street overpass sidewalk fell onto Interstate 55, injuring one motorist and stopping traffic for hours.

MODOT director Pete Rahn said the collapse was caused by salt and water corroding the iron bars holding the sidewalk in place.

"We have 119 bridges like this in the state and all of these bridges are currently being inspected to look for any telltale signs that might indicate that this is occurring," Rahn said.

Rahn said only one overpass, the Holly Hills bridge over I-55s shows signs of similar corrosion.

He said the Delor overpass will remain closed until further notice.
