Springfield, Ill. – A program that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich claimed would help 9,000 veterans has so far enrolled just 14.
The governor was quick to tout the Veterans Care program as one that will offer health care to thousands of veterans who don't qualify for federal assistance.
But with enrollment open for more than two months and 200 outreach events held across the state, only 14 people have signed up.
A state spokesperson says it's worth it even if just one vet signs up, but some lawmakers question whether it's a good use of state time and money.
Department of Veterans' Affairs spokeswoman Januari Smith says enrollment will grow as promotions continue and veterans learn about the program, which no other state is offering.
The Illinois chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars says the state should focus on improving care at nursing homes for veterans.
