St. Louis – Missouri voters will decide November 7th whether veterans' organizations should be tax exempt. It's one of six measures on the state ballot this election.
The Missouri Tax Commission has ruled that veterans' organizations are not considered charitable groups under the state constitution, therefore should not be tax exempt.
But State Senator Luann Ridgeway said groups like the Veterans of Foreign Wars do provide charitable services.
The Republican says the organizations have been taxed in only two counties but she wants to prevent more from doing so.
"If we don't clarify this it's possible that many other jurisdictions could begin taxing them and of course that would be devastating to many of our VFW and American Legion posts throughout Missouri."
Ridgeway says she has heard of no opposition to the ballot the measure.
