Missouri Supreme Court agrees to speed up voter ID ruling

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – The Missouri Supreme Court says it will quickly consider a new law requiring voters to show a photo I.D.

A Cole County judge ruled that the I.D. requirement is an unconstitutional infringement on the right to vote.

The judge also denied a request for the Department of Revenue to issue free I.D. cards while the dispute moves through the courts.

The attorney general and secretary of state say the matter must move quickly, so it's resolved before Election Day.

The state argues that voters and election workers need to know soon what the
rules will be for this fall's election.

The court set arguments for October fourth, when it is also hearing a tobacco tax ballot issue.
