Sales tax holiday this weekend in Missouri

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The annual sales tax holiday starts Friday in Missouri and runs through Sunday.

People buying back to school items like computers, clothes, and supplies don't need to pay the state sales tax, which is 4.225%.

Sales tax will be charged, however, on other items not on the back-to-school list. And local city sales taxes might still be charged, depending on which town the store is in. Municipalities have the right to opt out of the holiday. Nearly half of the counties, as well as about a third of taxing cities, will still charge taxes.

Many local governments fear they can't afford to lose the tax revenue. But tax holiday supporters say it will draw in shoppers who then also buy items still subject to sales taxes.
