Edwardsville, Ill. – There are new accusations of plagiarism swirling at Southern Illinois University, this time at the Edwardsville campus.
The issue relates to Chancellor Vaughn Vandegrift's Martin Luther King Junior Day address in February. In it, he attributed one quote, but other portions appear to come from other writings, a Web site and a White House proclamation.
Vandegrift says the speech was written by his staff, who told him they thought using unattributed remarks was acceptable because it wasn't an academic paper.
In February, the Chancellor of SIUs Carbondale campus, Walter Wendler, acknowledged he left out the source of an anecdote during a speech last year.
Supporters of a professor fired from SIUE in 2004 for plagiarism say Vandegrift's questioned remarks prove the administration's hypocrisy.
