KC schools balk at annexation plan

By AP/KWMU

Kansas City, MO – Officials with the Kansas City School District are balking at a plan to switch seven of their schools over to a district in nearby Independence, Mo.

State Senator Victor Callahan is pushing for the annexation and sponsoring legislation in Jefferson City that would make it possible.

But a Kansas City School District consultant says the plan amounts to a "hostile takeover."

The Kansas City district sent a letter to parents last week saying the annexation would remove about 40% of the district's white students and could spark a federal desegregation lawsuit.

The plan would allow part of the Kansas City School District that sits inside the city boundaries of Independence and Sugar Creek to switch school districts. State law provides for district boundary changes, but requires separate votes in both school districts.
