New airport screening rules take effect Thursday

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The new regulations from the Transportation Security Administration allow passengers to carry some sharp items on airplanes.

The changes reflect the TSA's focus on screening primarily for explosive devices.

Lambert Airport federal security director Bill Switzer says while some new things are permitted, other items remain banned.

"What you can bring on now are small scissors less than four inches from the fulcrum to the tip tools are now permitted as long as they're seven inches or less," Switzer said. "Definitely no knives; that's always been there and will continue to be there.

Passengers may carry up to four packs of matches, but cigarette lighters are not allowed.
