St. Louis, MO – Gas is back to $3 a gallon at many stations in the St. Louis region this morning (Thursday).
That comes as the EPA has granted a temporary waiver that will allow St. Louis area gas stations sell conventional fuel, instead of reformulated.
Stations will be able to do that through Oct. 7. The move is aimed at ensuring an adequate supply of gasoline, in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Stations can only put the conventional gas into their pumps until Oct. 7; all conventional gas in those pumps must be dispensed by Nov. 6.
The St. Louis region has long been cited for poor air quality. One effort to improve it is a rule requiring service stations to sell only cleaner-burning reformulated gasoline.
