Wellston schools get new state-picked board

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO. – Missouri education officials voted Wednesday to appoint an advisory board to run the Wellston School District, effective Friday.

The board named Charles Brown the new superintendent. He was a teacher and administrator in St. Louis Public Schools for 30 years.

Brown will join Garry Beals and Cassandra Hollins-Wallace in running the district. They both live in the district and will be unpaid members of the board.

Directly after the State Board of Education decision Wednesday afternoon, an attorney for the suburban St. Louis district went to the Cole County Courthouse seeking to stop the board's action.

The district has been unaccredited since June 2003. Since it has not regained accreditation in two years, the district ceases to exist in its current form and the locally elected school board loses power.

Last week, the board voted not to re-accredit the district, saying it had not made enough academic improvement.
