St. Louis, MO. – The state of Missouri will proceed with tonight's scheduled execution of convicted murderer Vernon Brown.
Governor Matt Blunt denied clemency for Brown, who was sentenced to death for the 1986 murder of nine-year-old Janet Perkins.
The state Board of Probaton and Parole recommended the denial of clemency. In the last two executions this year, the board had recommended the governor commute the death sentences.
But Blunt spokeswoman Jessica Robinson says the governor took many factors into account.
"These cases have gone through years of litigation and years of trial and years of discussion," Robinson said. "So there are several people besides just the Board of Probation and Parole who have recommended the death penalty."
Brown will be given a lethal injection just after midnight at the state facility in Bonne Terre.
