Shrewsbury wants to keep unattended kids out of cars

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – The St. Louis Board of Aldermen will consider legislation Friday that would make it illegal to leave a child younger than 10 alone in a vehicle.

Aldermanic President Jim Shrewsbury plans to introduce the bill during the board's next meeting.

He said it was prompted by an incident in south St. Louis earlier this year.

"Now fortunately nothing bad happened in that particular situation, but with the summertime coming, I think it's very important that people be aware that leaving a child in a car is a very dangerous situation" Shrewsbury said.

Shrewsbury says the city has no law on the books to deal with kids left unattended in cars.

The maximum penalty under the proposal would be a $500 fine.
