Protests continue at Riverview Gardens HS

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Student protests continued Monday at the Riverview Gardens school district headquarters in north St. Louis County.

The two sides are looking for a mediator to end the dispute over the firing of a popular principal.

About 100 students demonstrating against the firing of high school principal Clem Ukaoma met at a nearby church to talk about enlisting a mediator.

Three weeks ago the school board voted not to renew Ukaoma's contract on the advice of superintendent Henry Williams.

But the Reverend Tommie Pierson, who serves on the board, says Williams gave no detailed reason for his decision and Pierson is siding with students to reinstate the principal.

"We're going to stay the course; we're going to get him back, because we're not going to give up until we get him back," Pierson said.

Superintendent Williams could not be reached for comment.
