La Crosse, Wis. – The diocese that Raymond Burke headed before being named the Archbishop of St. Louis has a new leader.

Bishop Jerome Listecki was installed Wednesday as the ninth bishop of the La Crosse, Wisc. diocese.

He succeeds Burke, who last year became the archbishop in St. Louis.

Listecki is from Chicago and recalls watching Burke's installation in Wisconsin 1995.

Listecki's previous superior, Chicago's Cardinal Francis George, told worshippers that Listecki would be a good leader and their faithful friend in the 19-county diocese.

Listecki is both a canon lawyer, who specializes in church law, and a civil attorney. He was ordained in 1975.

The pope appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Chicago Archdiocese in 2000.

The La Crosse diocese serves more than 200,000 Catholics in 164 parishes in west-central Wisconsin.
