Illinois ID Card Fee Quintuples January 1

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, Ill – Illinois residents who want to avoid paying higher fees may want to head to the secretary of state's office this week.

Starting January First, the price of a state-issued ID card increases from $4 to $20. Changing an address on an I-D card will set you back $10, instead of the current $2.

The cards will remain free for the disabled, those over 65 and anyone living in veterans homes or hospitals.

The fee increases were approved earlier this year as part of efforts to raise about $24 million for the state budget.

Motorists who procrastinate will also take a hit.

Failing to renew a license plate will now carry a $20 late fee, although Secretary of State Jesse White says motorists will get a 30-day grace period.
