Two Groups Sue Granite City Housing Authority

By KWMU Staff

St. Louis, MO – The lawsuit was filed by the Equal Housing Opportunity Council of St. Louis and IMPACT Inc., an organization that helps the disabled live independently.

The suit accuses the Granite City Housing Authority and Environs Architects of violating the Fair Housing Act.

The council believes 36 housing units that are part of a new public housing project in Granite City are inaccessible for disabled seniors.

EHOC executive director Will Jordan says the kitchens and bathrooms are inadequately designed.

"You have bathroom sinks that are too close to the wall, you have a door swing that doesn't allow you to get to the toilet or to the sink...and if you do get your wheelchair into the bathroom you will not be able to close the door behind you," Jordan said.

The housing units were completed in October 2002.
