St. Charles, MO – The group heading up the effort is upset that Mayor Patti York has blocked the hiring of a new police chief.

The City Council voted for Bob Lowery of the Florissant police department.

But York said no.

Spokesman Jay Underdown says his group would need more than 6,500 valid signatures to force a recall vote... possibly sometime next year:

"Although there are a number of other problems, we feel the lack of having a full-time police chief adversely affects the safety of the citizens of our city," Underdown said.

Mayor York has not been available for comment... but the effort to oust her could soon be moot.

A ballot question in November will ask voters whether they want to change the City Charter to give the City Council a way to make such hires without the mayor's approval.
