CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A woman from southeast Missouri is challenging a law that makes Missouri parents criminals if their kids don't regularly attend school.
Brenda Self was convicted of a misdemeanor last year and even sentenced to 15 days in jail after her daughter missed 40 days of school during one school year. The daughter was enrolled at Caruthersville Accelerated Middle School.
But Self claims the attendance law is unconstitutionally vague because it doesn't specify how many absences would trigger the criminal charges.
The state Supreme Court will hear the case September 15th.
Self's 15-day sentence was suspended pending completion of two years of unsupervised probation.
