After Handover, Local Religious Leaders Pray for Peace in Iraq

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – A day after the U.S. handover of power in Iraq, St. Louis religious leaders from several faiths prayed for peace in that country.

The service at Christ Church Cathedral Tuesday started with a reading of the names of more than 1,700 people who have died in the conflict.

But Orvin Kimbrough who heads the Interfaith Partnership of Metro St. Louis says the gathering was not an antiwar demonstration.

"It's really about understanding the commonalities within all of our faith traditions," Kimbrough said. "All of our faith traditions promote peace and love. And that's why we are here today. We are here as a symbol of peace with the expectation of peace."

The service included prayers from Christian, Hindu and Muslim leaders, among others.
