Springfield, Ill – Private collection agencies that track down deadbeat parents could take a pay cut under legislation being considered by Illinois lawmakers.
Lawmakers say these groups overcharge parents when they help collect court-ordered child support.
Both the House and Senate have overwhelmingly passed bills to cap the fees charged by these collection agencies.
Private agencies would not be able to keep more than 35 percent of the past-due support they collect. They would be also barred from charging fees on current and future support payments.
The vice president of a Texas-based collection agency says the fees are necessary to do business. Vanessa Diaz says her company, Supportkids, won't do business in Illinois if the change becomes law.
